Professional Tip

When you create ordering exercises like this, it's a good idea to give a couple of numbers in the middle so that students know more quickly if they have made a mistake rather than waiting until they get to the end and then having to start again.

icone_listen.gif - 1470 Bytes4 Can you remember the verb, noun, adjective, preposition or phrase which collocates with each word above? Listen again and check.
Examples:
1. hours: long hours
2. fun: have fun
3. bar: go to a bar

Study Tip

. Try to remember words in phrases, with collocates, not in isolation, and teach them in the same way.
. And, when you teach, don't write individual words on the board but phrases, e.g. a/an + noun, an adjective with a noun, a verb in a phrase, etc. This will provide students with a much better record too.

Later, I have to start ___ about work again; marking homework and preparing for Monday. In the evening we normally________ in front of 'Fantastico' on TV. Weekends ________ so fast.

Study Tip

Most English learners hate prepositions! Do you?
. Learn prepositions together with a verb or adjective, e.g. laugh at, not just laugh.
. Keep testing yourself. Study the 'Test you prepositions' exercise in Section E of every unit. You'll begin to know which preposition 'sounds right'. Good luck!

6 How many matches can you make with these verbs, prepositions and objects?
Example: Laugh at a joke, laugh with a friend, laugh about what happened
laugh at someone
chat to something
listen with
talk about
be interested in
ask

7 Vocabulary analysis. Explain the difference between these then compare with the Key.
1. Do the shopping vs go shopping
2. Go for a walk/run vs go walking/running
3. Fun vs funny

1. Mummy made me eat my M & Ms.
2. There's a minimum of cinnamon in the aluminium pan.
3. The dancing King Kong sang a long song.

Note: Did you notice how American accents are more nasal?

10 Look back at Vocabulary Builder Unit 9. For two minutes make some true sentences using go, play and do about your typical weekend.
Examples:

I don't like my husband playing football every Sunday.
