Professional tip

When possible, try to learn and teach words and phrases in meaningful groups e.g. classroom language. This makes them easier to remember.
How do your students organise their vocabulary books? Here are some ways of grouping new words:
. in pairs e.g. words that are similar in meaning or the opposite (your students get two for the price of one!)
. by topic e.g. family, parts of the body
. in grammatical groups e.g. adverbs of frequency: never, sometimes, often, always
. on a scale or steps e.g. baby - child - teenager - adult - pensioner

4 Practise the phrases in the Present Continuous. Cover the phrases. Look at the pictures and describe what the boy is doing each time.
Pratique as frases no Presente Contínuo. Cubra as frases. Olhe as figuras e descreva o que o garoto está fazendo a cada vez.

Professional tip

Instructions are very difficult to give and to understand. Take a cassette into class and record yourself giving instructions Then listen to it afterwards. Ask yourself:
1. How clear were you?
2. Could you say less next time?
3. Could you have mimed more of the instructions?
4. Did students need more examples?

8 Update your Portfolio. Look at pictures A to V. Can you say them all, plus the opposites of phrases A to J in less than two minutes? Record yourself doing this.
