Study Tip

. To help students understand English word stress, encourage them to play with their voices like in 1 and 2 above. They'll discover that they say the stressed sounds a bit louder because they need more air. They'll also probably say them at a higher pitch and for longer than the unstressed sounds.
. /h/ Ask your students to breathe in and then slowly breathe out and sigh. As they are sighing they should say house, her, happy, etc. The tongue doesn't touch the roof of the mouth.
. /r/ Show a picture of an angry dog! Ask students "What sound does the dog make?" RRRrrrrrrrrrr. Show a picture of a speeding car. Ask students "What sound does a car make?" Vrrrrrrrrrrrrm. In spite of the V at the beginning of the sound, it helps students get the idea.
