We use - will for instant decisions, e.g. I___ get the next one. - Would you like for offers and invitations, e.g. Would you ___ another coffee? - I'd like for polite requests, e.g. I__ like a coffee, please. - I'd like (you) to for things that people want to do and invitations, e.g. I'd like ___ pay, I__ really like you to come. . Sometimes beginning with the 'music' like this, can really help with Pronunciation. If students first hear and practise the intonation pattern, then fit the words to this 'music', they often pronounce much better. It's memorable too and certainly improves awareness of intonation. . For example, put/draw some bubbles on pieces of paper, write the words on another for students to match them together. If you do this, put a cross in the top right hand corner of the paper, so students know which way round the bubbles are! 8 Teacher Speak Intonation is extremely difficult to teach. How else can you help students with it? Think of three ideas, then compare with the key. . Invite them for a drink (and a snack) . Choose your drinks (and a snack) . Insist you pay . Take the drinks to their table . Comment on the drinks . Invite somebody somewhere . Insist . Have an accident . Apologise . Insist you pay for the damage. .
