I always seem to be in a hurry in the mornings. Classes start at 7 o'clock so I usually get up at 5.30. I'd love to have time to do some exercise before breakfast but I never do. For breakfast, I generally have some fruit - apples are my favourite - a white coffee, a piece of bread and some cheese. After that I quickly have a shower, clean my teeth and get dressed. We don't have to wear a special 'uniform' so I go in jeans and a blouse. I hardly ever wear a skirt. I don't wear much make-up for school, only a bit of mascara and lipstick. I go by car and it normally takes about 45 minutes. But sometimes the traffic can be awful. Last week when I was driving to school, there was a bad accident and I was really late. I usually arrive at about 6.45, but that day I got there at 7.45 and missed my first class. I needed another coffee! My timetable is quite tough. I have to teach five classes before lunch without a real break. By lunchtime, I'm often starving!

15 Revision. Which two other words in the text have a /t/ ending but a different spelling?

Pronunciation Tip

. Brazilians often add an extra syllable to final consonants e.g. tax becomes taxi; cough becomes coffee. A good way to check your own and your students' pronunciation is to record yourself/them reading a tapescript from an EFL book. Then compare with the original recording.

16 Analyse the tenses in this sentence. Which tenses are used and why?
When I was driving to school, there was a bad accident.

17 What's the difference in meaning? How would explain this to your students?
1. I was making some coffee when Paulo arrived.
2. I made some coffee when Paulo arrived.

Study Tip

. For exercises like this which ask you to explain grammar, try to imagine you are giving the explanation in English to a low-level class. If you have time, write down your explanation.
. Compare your answer with the key to see how similar they are.
