Section 8B practises:
. intonation, pronunciation of silent letters and can/ can't
. the zero conditional

icone_listen.gif - 1470 Bytes 12 Shadow read the text. Read aloud and copy the intonation as closely as you can.

Professional Tip

Pause the audio after each sentence. Repeat each sentence twice before continuing to the next one. Try to copy the exact tone of voice. This is a good technique to use in class too.

Every day I have lunch at the same restaurant near the school. It's a self-service restaurant, a ´por kilo´ - you pay according to how much your food weighs. All the teachers at my school eat there. I usually only have a salad with either chicken or fish. I can't eat two big meals a day. I'm careful about what I eat and try to have red meat only once a week if I can. Then it's back to work at another school. I normally teach eight or nine classes a day.
In the evenings I get home at about 7.00. Like most Brazilians I have to watch the soaps so we generally have dinner after the first one, at about 8.30. Thiago has football training twice a week so we eat later on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If we have meat, vegetables or feijoada, Thiago cooks. If we want rice, I do it because he hates cooking rice. After dinner, we just relax and watch TV or listen to music. We hardly ever go out during the week. We don't usually go to bed before 11.30. Six hours' sleep is enough for me and I can't sleep if I go to bed too early.

13 Pronunciation. English spelling is made more difficult by 'silent letters'. For example: chocolate, comfortable, breakfast, married, scissors
Cross out the silent letters in these words from the text.
