Feira Preta Festival reaches its 23rd edition this year, taking place for the first time in Salvador. The event will be held at Praça Maria Felipa, in front of Mercado Modelo — a landmark location in the city.

Throughout its history, Feira Preta has reached over 200,000 people and supported more than five thousand Brazilian entrepreneurs. This consolidates the event as the largest festival of Black culture and creative economy in Latin America.

In addition to offering plenty of music and cultural experiences, the Feira Preta Festival aims to promote prosperity within the Black community. This year’s guiding theme is “Axé – The Revolution that Throws a Party.”

The festival features two stages hosting performances by artists such as Rachel Reis, Sued Nunes, Jau and Ministereo Publico. Beyond music, the cultural programme includes “Preta na Moda”, dedicated to fashion shows by Black designers and brands; “Preta Talks”, which presents talks, book launches and stand-up comedy shows; and “Feira Pretinha”, offering an exclusive programme for children.

To encourage Black entrepreneurship and creative economy, the festival showcases products and services, and hosts “Preta Degusta”, an event featuring entrepreneurs who highlight Black and Afro-Brazilian cuisine and gastronomy.

All programme is free, with a suggested donation of 1 kg of non-perishable food to local social institutions. The festival is held at the invitation of the Salvador City Hall, through the Municipal Department of Culture and Tourism (Secult), as part of the Salvador Capital Afro programme and takes part in the British Council’s Circular Culture programme.
