One of the most visionary creators of her generation, British artist Es Devlin presents her first exhibition in Brazil, at Casa Bradesco, curated by Marcello Dantas. Devlin’s work combines architecture, light, sound and collective participation, creating immersive experiences that question identity, alterity and our relationship with the natural and technological worlds. It is no coincidence that the highlight of the Brazilian exhibition is a monumental mirror maze, challenging our perception of reality, identity and the unknown.

Her practice ranges from public sculptures and installations at institutions such as Tate Modern, Victoria & Albert Museum, Serpentine Gallery, Imperial War Museum and the United Nations General Assembly, to kinetic stage designs for the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera. As a stage designer, she has created large-scale projects for global events such as the Olympic ceremonies and the Super Bowl halftime show, as well as monumental stage sculptures for artists including Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar and U2.

The title of the exhibition, I Am the Other’s Other, emerges from the dialogue between art and anthropological thought. Inspired by Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, who affirms that “perspective is constitutive of the world”, curator Marcello Dantas develops the idea to explain the exhibition’s proposal: “We become ‘I’ only when we accept that we are also, inevitably, the other of the other.”

Each installation invites visitors to experience themselves in relation to the other – as part of a temporary community, a chorus of differences in action.

The Installations

  • Infinite Library
An infinite library that gathers collective narratives, reminding us that all imagination is shared.

  • Mirror Maze
A labyrinth of mirrors that fragments identity and questions our relentless search for a stable image of ourselves.

  • Falling
Explores the experience of falling, revealing vulnerability and imbalance as part of the human condition.

  • Come Home Again
A chorus of species and presences that invites us to recognise the interdependence between humans, animals and cultures.

  • Surfacing
An environment that suggests emergences and revelations, bringing hidden layers of perception and memory to the surface.

  • Exquisite Corpse
A collective artwork in which visitors complete drawings initiated by the artist, creating a living record of encounters and perspectives.

  • Screen Share
The exhibition’s closing piece, where images circulate between body, paper and memory, symbolising the gesture of exchange and belonging.

With international partnership through the UK/Brazil Season of Culture, the exhibition reaffirms the commitment of the British Council and IGR to fostering cultural dialogue between Brazil and the United Kingdom, offering Brazilian audiences an immersive experience that unites art, technology and reflection on identity, alterity and sustainability.
